Inspiration Should Not Be Your Main Motivation

If you wait for inspiration to motivate you to get something done . . . you will probably not get around to getting much done.

You will probably start a lot of things. A LOT of seemingly randomly inspired things with no real discernible connection to themselves. Or anything else. But there is little chance of that inspiration pushing you it finish a thing.

That is just a weird quick of inspiration. Great starter, horrible finisher. Doesn’t put in the effort needed for follow through. If inspiration were a basketball player, it would be a streaky shooter who could pull off flashy dunks but barely hit a free throw.

Sometimes the best motivation for getting things done is the release of stress from knowing it is done. Sometimes the best motivation is the pain of the consequences for not getting it done. Sometimes, it’s pure bribery.

Whatever it takes, just get it done. Don’t let the lack of inspiration hold your work back. The world wants to see your work.
