We all know how the saying goes: every journey begins with a single step. But before you can take that first step, you have to decide you have a need for a journey. From there, you can just stand up, face the direction of your desired destination, and walk on.

One problem to deal with first: you are missing an important part of that plan. You don’t have a desired destination to point toward. Your plan, plain and simple, is just to start walking until you get to ‘there,’ a hope that there is a satisfactory place to be.

Nothing like a journey to nowhere to help you realize there are much better uses of your time.

I know too many people who get spontaneity confused with indecisiveness, so don’t you be one of them. You can’t just decide to climb a mountain. You have to gather your gear, catch up on your training, and find the right mountain you want to climb. It helps to do this well before the time to begin your assent is at hand.

Knowing you want to go somewhere is a great start. Knowing where somewhere is and plotting a course to get there is the key to learning and progression.
