There Is Nothing Wrong With Backup Plans

The question we ask our leaders to often is, “What are we going to do?”

The question that does not get asked often enough is, “What are we going to do if what you want us to do doesn’t work?”

Contingencies should be expected. Alternate choices should be discussed. Back up plans are meant to be disposable, so you should have plenty of them available.

Field Marshall Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke did write “Therefore no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force,” which is popularly paraphrased as, “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” Take this advice to heart, and have a few backup plans.
